NPPES (National Plan and Provider Enumeration System) is managed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) - a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The NPPES database contains all provider NPI data and is published monthly by CMS. Because providers must have an NPI (National Provider Identifier) in order to submit claims the database contains all individual, group and organizational providers that are eligible to submit claims to Medicare/Medicaid.
As such, NPPES is the largest public domain database of physicians and other medical providers available.
NPPESData.com is a private, commercial service that provides scrubbed and formatted NPI data on a fee and subscription basis. NPPESData.com is in no way affiliated with the U.S. Government or any branch thereof.
The NPI data set is published monthly by CMS in a single, flat (non-relational) CSV file with:
- 314 columns
- Over 3 million records
- 3.6GB in size (370MB compressed)
- 30-50 hours to scrub and load initially,
- 50-100 hours to develop software to manage updates and exception processing,
- 10-30 hours per month in loading updates, patching software and performing exception management.
Using our data and update service, NPPESData.com can reduce these initial requirements down to 5-10 hours initially and 2-3 hours per month to process updates.
NPPESData.com provides NPI data:
- In flat and relational structures
- As a single download
- As a subscription update service
- Via electronic download with optional delivery DVDs
